Anthony Travalgia: Sizing up the Jets opponents in an all-Canadian division The Jets will reportedly be a part of an all-Canadian division when the season begins in mid January.

Fun fact,
Not one of these teams had more wins than the Jets last year.

Jets didn’t lose anyone significant from last year and gained Demelo and Stastny yet most see us near the bottom of the division.

Anylitics are a hell of a drug I suppose.

The Jets defense has got to be much more physical in their own zone in order for the team to have success.

As I posted on other sites...

It’s 9 or 10 games not 7 or 8.

The Canadian division is interesting because it's probably the most even division out of all the new divisions with realignment. Only Ottawa looks like they are a long shot for a playoff spot.

The big winners is looking at the Pacific division teams. They really only have only 4 playoff teams so it would take a big upset for one of the top 4 to miss out. Colorado, Vegas, Blues and the Stars should have it locked in that order playing the Ducks, Kings, Coyotes and Sharks. If I'm in a fantasy draft, it's going to be point night anytime the Avalanche are playing those teams in the bottom four.

I look at the Jets and feel we are a solid wildcard in the old Central but that's pretty much the same as every team in the Canadian division. If you look at the rest of the Canadian division, the Maple Leafs just got older and just seem to be treading water in the same spot by bolstering their lineup with past their prime name talent. I don't get the hype. Calgary got better overall with Markstrom but their defense took a hit. I would be more worried about them over the Leafs. Edmonton will take a step back but considering how average the Canadian teams are, this may not show until the playoffs like this year when they were eliminated by a team that should of been tanking.

Talent wise the Jets are as good as any team in the division. Problem is they play a trash system that relies on a Vezina performance by Hellebuyck to bail them out.

The way the Jets are built now, with the system they have, and their apparent disdain for young talent... Ottawa could have a rival for dead last without another Hart-level performance from Hellebuyck.

Today @ 7:25 AM ET

The Jets don't play any defensive system or have a decent breakout from their own zone. They have a GM that believes in a draft and develop system but a coach that would rather play waiver wire pickups then give the young kids a fair chance.

Maybe Chevy should stop picking up players from the waivers and then Maurice would have to play the kids ?

if this is how you feel then you now must want a Laine trade as we can not get any worse than what you are predicting with him. interesting turn in your thought process.

I couldn't agree more. Forbort may help that way, but not sure it is enough.

I like how the Jets stack up. This Canadian division is not as threatening as the Central has been for most of the last decade. The record last year against Canadian teams was solid, on paper Jets have improved in every area with exception of goal. Travel schedule is probably lighter than what they are used to.

I think Vancouver is in for some growth pains this year after a dreamy 2019/20. Some are high on Montreal I don't see it. Is Toronto any better than last year? I think there will be decent parity with no clear favourites and only Ottawa as a true underdog - and they will be better than last season, able to provide some upsets.

1. Winnipeg
2. Edmonton
3. Calgary
4. Toronto
5. Vancouver
6. Montreal
7. Ottawa

Every one has their thoughts - and predictions - of where these teams in Canada may end up in the standings.

My "guess":
1 - Toronto
2 - Montreal
3 - Winnipeg
4 - Calgary
5 - Vancouver
6 - Edmonton
7 - Ottawa

No real reason for guesses. Toronto should be improved with additional veteran leadership, and the Habs should be much improved with additions to line-up.

My feeling is the Jets just need that one top-pairing d-man and they may well be right up there contending for top spot. If they don't acquire that d-man, don't see them contending. Boy I hope I'm wrong if we stick as is.

Maybe a kid like Samberg or Heinola will surprise?

Better beat on the Sens now because they are going to be right there in a year or two with their youngsters and draft picks.

But like you say, the Jets have basically the same line-up as last year with the exception of adding Stastny, and having DeMelo for full year. So they should be better. I hope so.

Not sure what happens if Hellebuyck ever gets hurt? Don't want to think about it!

I’m sure the 2006 Washington Capitals strongly considered trading Ovechkin for that same reason.

See Perfetti made the Junior squad. Great!

So Perfetti and Heinola only Jets prospects playing in Juniors tournament, right?
Or did I miss someone?

At least we'll have someone to cheer for!

I'm pretty sure Henri Nikkanen will play for Finland, he's drafted by the Jets but isn't signed yet.

What in Rexypoo's comment would indicate that he'd now want a Laine trade?

They traded Sundin when they had two better players at the position he played, and won a cup within 2 years.

The Jets don’t have two franchise wingers better than Laine, nor are they in a position to trade him and win a cup with the pieces.
